While your are at university or college you have a great opportunity to help the environment.
Oxford Brookes is known for being environmentally conscious. They ranked 5th in the green league and were the first Fairtrade University in the world.
As a world leading research university, Oxford University includes The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, School of Geography and the Environment and the Environmental Change Institute and the Climate-X initiative.
Very Easy
- At Oxford University? You could join the student union Environment and Ethics society.
- At Oxford Brookes University? Here’s a list of campaigning societies. You’ll meet like minded people and hopefully make a difference.
- - Buy Fair trade at the Oxford Brookes campus shops.
- - Oxford University has a diverse portfolio of research relating to the environment. The Oxford Environment network aims to pool together lectures, seminars and events from all disciplines relating to people and the environment within Oxford. Subscribe to the mailing list.
- - Need to do some reading? The Free Library provides lots of publications. Try getting started on the environmental issues category
Fairly Easy
- Oxford Brookes promotes recycling amongst its students. You could encourage your flat mates to reduce their waste by putting the information on display
- - When moving into your digs you may need the extra bit or bob. Orinoco runs a swap shop. Alternatively there is Freecycle.

The Green Project is the focal point for efforts by the Oxford Hub relating to protection of the environment and sustainable lifestyles through volunteering.
- - You can volunteer help the sustainability team at Brookes through their “Time to Get Involved Scheme”. The tag line is “Sick of being an Eco Chump? Become an Eco Champ!”
- - Why shop when you can swap? Contact your local Community Action Group or look out for posters for their regular Saturday Swap Shops.
- - Buy recycled products online at the Recycled Products website.
Not Quite So Easy
- - Why not de-clutter by holding your own swap shop amongst your friends and flat mates. Aany left over items can be given to charity or put on Freecycle.
- - Enough talking... you could walk the walk by getting an environmental job on finishing university. Oxford Brookes Careers have an environment section Volunteering can help a great deal with this.
- - An EcoTeam is a group of friends who get together once a fortnight to reduce their environmental impacts. EcoTeam leaders are given resources and support so that they can set up and lead teams that are successful in taking positive action on.
